About

The aim of the Dome Guides Association is to promote and maintain a tourism industry of which the people of the area can be proud.

The Vredefort Dome is the popular name for the world’s oldest and largest meteorite impact crater. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. The Dome is visited by many thousands annually. Its attractions include:

  • the landscape itself, with evidence of the impact and tours led by local experts as well as university professors
  • adventure tourism in the form of rafting on the Vaal, hiking in the Dome Bergland, horse riding and mountain biking in the hills and the open veld; abseiling on cliff faces, and more
  • art and antiques, with many local artists and craftsmen producing paintings, carvings, ironwork and textiles; and a thriving trade in old furniture and heirlooms from surrounding farms and further afield
  • eating and out and staying over, especially in the town of Parys which has many coffee bars, restaurants, lodges and hotels
  • game viewing, wildlife photography, bird watching and controlled hunting in private reserves throughout the region
  • archaeology, battlefields, history, culture and nature tours
  • and simple leisure activities such as strolling on the banks of the Vaal and driving scenic roads in the Dome.
